Southern Utah backcountry terrain

RZR & Off-Road Adventures

Southern Utah's canyon country is a playground for off-road enthusiasts. Explore backcountry routes, red-rock terrain, and wide-open desert that you simply can't reach any other way.

Safety & Regulations

Always follow local trail rules, posted regulations, and your rental company's requirements. Helmets and safety equipment are required on most routes. Some federal and state lands require permits or restrict certain vehicle types. Conditions change—check current access before heading out.

About Off-Roading in This Area

The Bryce Canyon region is surrounded by some of Utah's most scenic and accessible backcountry terrain. Whether you're renting a side-by-side for the day or bringing your own rig, the landscapes here—red rock formations, slot canyons, sand dunes, high-desert plains—are unlike anything else in the country.

Happy Trails is conveniently located for exploring both the north and south of the Grand Staircase. If you're hauling equipment, ask us about trailer parking availability when you book.

Rentals & Guided Tours

Contact our staff when you arrive using the contact information provided with your reservation — rental providers and guided tour operators in this area change seasonally. Our team knows the current options, pricing, and which outfitters are worth calling.

Rental tips: Most providers require a valid driver's license, minimum age (varies by operator), and a deposit. Book ahead during peak summer and fall months — equipment fills up fast.

Popular Off-Road Areas

Kanab Creek & Sand Hills

Sandy terrain and open terrain southwest of Bryce make for exciting side-by-side runs. The area around Kanab offers miles of accessible backcountry trails.

Check current access and permit requirements before heading out.

Grand Staircase-Escalante Backcountry

Dirt roads and 4WD tracks wind through one of the most remote landscapes in the lower 48. Incredible scenery but requires preparation and route planning.

High-clearance vehicles recommended. Inform someone of your route.

Coral Pink Sand Dunes

A state park near Kanab with designated OHV areas in stunning pink-sand dunes. Popular with families and experienced riders alike.

OHV permit required. Helmets required. Check nightly closures.

Panguitch Lake & Markagunt Plateau

Forest roads and ATV trails north of Bryce Canyon through high-elevation meadows and pine forest. Cooler temperatures in summer.

Some routes require a Dixie National Forest OHV permit.

Seasonal Considerations

Spring (Apr–May)

Mud and wet conditions on dirt roads. Some high-elevation routes may still be snow-covered. Check conditions carefully.

Summer (Jun–Aug)

Peak season with maximum daylight. Start early to avoid afternoon thunderstorms. Hot temperatures at lower elevations.

Fall (Sep–Oct)

Ideal conditions. Cooler temps, dramatic fall color, and crowds thin out after Labor Day.

Winter (Nov–Mar)

Many backcountry routes are closed or impassable. Some lower-elevation areas remain accessible. Always check current conditions.
